Here's how it works:

The jack plate is designed to swivel on the rugged stainless steel shaft in case of an obstacle such as a stump or rock while carefully trolling back to the hotspots your buddies can't reach! Simply tighten the side swivels to desired setting for your rig size and you are protected from a potential lower unit or prop BOO-BOO! Also included are two safety chains to prevent overtravel swiveling of engine when an obstruction is encountered. Tightness is determined by engine reverse requirement. The larger the engine, the tighter the swivels for preventing flip-up during reverse. To adjust the jack plate height setting, loosen the side bolts and raise or lower the jack plate using the center adjusting bolt. Once done adjusting, tighten side bolts and you are done adjusting. This is the only Kick-Up plate manufactured by any manufacturer that has vertical travel similar to a jack plate as well as the kick up function in the case of hitting a log, stump or earth below. No springs to break and no replacement parts necessary as the JPL9620 is made of aircraft quality aluminum and 3/8 stainless steel chain, grade 316! CLAMP ON ENGINES: This unit is compatible with clamp on engines by adding the accessory star-board plate. If you have a clamp-on engine that is not standard BIA Bolt pattern and wish to use this unit, in the options tab add the star-board plate for clamp on engines and it will come installed on the unit so you can use your clamps and have a solid mounting surface. The starboard plate adds 9 more pounds to the weight of the item. The plate is made from marine grade plastic that is resistant to freezing, corrosion, and rot. It is 1 inch thick and spans across the entire mounting surface so that you have plenty of room to mount your engine.
Trailer Your boat:
Locking pins and similar are not necessary for your Vance Manufacturing Kick-Up unit to trailer your boat.
