The Kennel Club said this year that the Lab is still the most popular breed of dog out there! and were not just talking about a hunting breed, they were talking about the breed in general!  One of the most versatile breeds out there when it comes to hunting though!!!

For most it would be a Labrador or Golden. Don't discount the spaniels, English Springers, American Water, Irish Water and Boykins are all great dogs. I have not met a spaniel yet that isn't family friendly. I prefer chessies but they are not for every one but are very family dedicated. The important thing to look at is the pedigree, it will tell you what you need to know to determine if a pup from that litter will be good with your family and fit your needs.

     Good luck,
     Bill

Got to go with labs.  Don't have one of my own yet but my family has had them in the past.  And now it is amazing the crap my dad's lab puts up with from my two young boys.

Big 10-4 on the Springers Bill!  Great upland game dog!  Had one for 15 years before I had to put him down  I have had four labs in my life and to this day that springer still had the best nose ever!!  Great size for upland game, Great personality(never seen a mean or bad one) nice size if you want to have them in the house.  You will have to keep them trimed though!  They grow hair fast.  But a great all around loving dog!

I guess I was wrong about opening a can of worms. All yall seem to be lab fans. Thanks for your opinions.

duckrazy, you didn't open up a can of worms!  I choose the breeds because of their versatility!!!  Don't want to pay a bunch of money on two or three different breeds of dogs to hunt two or three different types of hunting compared to one dog doing two or three types of hunting.  Certian dogs are bred for certian types hunting which is great!  Thats their forte.  To many hunters try to make dogs hunt outside of their norm and to me thats wrong! because that takes away from what that dog was bred for, and that type of hunting!  But if it works out, thats great.

I have hunted with and over quite a few labs, chessies and goldens. ALL have had their good and bad ones. I personally prefer labs.

MY FRIEND'S BLACK LAB IS A AWESOME HUNTER AND GOOD NATURED BOY. AS FOR ME THE WIRE HAIRED POINTING GRIFFON IS MY BREED.MY BOY GUNNER IS A BIRD FINDING MACHINE.

I THINK IT'S JUST A MATTER OF PREFERANCE AND WHAT BREED YOU HAVE BUILT THE CLOSEST BOND WITH.

I JUST LOVE DOGS. ALL OF THEM!

Nice Photo!  blackdog.  Ever thought about entering him in the SRS dog jumping competition?  That dog has perfect form!  Ears laid back, front legs tucked underneath, back legs strait out, and the tail to give him lift!  Perfect aerodynamics!  Just having fun with it! LOL  Great looking dog!
