The Redfish is one of the most popular sport fish in the United States. They are commonly known by several names: Red Drum, Channel Bass, Spot Tail Bass or in the marshlands, simply Reds. The Redfish's most distinguishing mark is a large, coin sized, black spot on the upper part of the tail's base. The black spot near their tail helps fool predators into attacking the red drum's tail instead of their head, allowing them to escape relatively unharmed.
The Redfish’s habitat consists of the sandy bottom of coastal waters or the mud bottoms of inland estuaries where they spend their day looking for food. Their diet mainly consists of crustaceans, mollusks and other smaller fish that they can find close to the ocean floor. Since they are bottom feeders, they are commonly caught with bait either on the bottom or suspended within a couple feet from the seabed.
Redfish are found in the Atlantic Ocean from the Massachusetts to Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico from Florida’s inner coast to Northern Mexico. Although found in more than half the waters in the United States, their population has been fragile due to it’s explosive popularity in American cuisine. As a result, on October 20, 2007 President George W. Bush issued an Executive Order that classified the Redfish as a protected game fish and prohibited the sale of Redfish caught in Federal waters. The Order also encourages states to consider designating the Redfish as a protected game fish within state waters, and all states have limits on the amount that can be caught.
